Gold Dragon

Gold Dragon - Single hopped with Galena from The Alley Kat Brewing Company

"In the sip the first experience is of a soft, attractive malt base of toffee, biscuit and rounded malt. The hops start off with a resiny flavour and mouthfeel, but then becomes earthier as the beer moves back. The linger is spicy like hop tentacles with a noted bitterness. The linger builds in sharp hoppy character as the glass drains. The beer presents as fairly sweet at the beginning but then allows itself to sharpen and dry out from the hop experience." • Pedigree: Galena was part of an Idaho breeding program in 1968 and was derived from an open-pollinated cross of Brewers Gold. It was released for cultivation in 1978. Galena has a very high 11.5%-14% alpha acid content and brings a clean crisp bitterness making it suitable for nearly any type of beer needing kick. This variety has higher myrcene oil content than most hops which brings the aroma of sweet fruits such as grapes and peaches, while at the same time having the essence of woody or grassy elements. The balance of myrcene with the other oils brings a moderate and pleasant aroma making it applicable for aroma additions. Galena is the most "mellow" hop of the high-alpha varieties, and has replaced Cluster as the most widely grown US hop. Great general purpose bittering hop.
  • General Trade Perception: Excellent high alpha hop with balanced bittering and aroma characteristics; finding favour as a dual purpose variety
