HOP VARIETY: PRIMA DONNA (FIRST GOLD)

  • Pedigree: Bred at Wye College in 1995 and originally introduced to the commercial market as First Gold. Prima Donna is a cross between WGV with a dwarf male and has many of Goldings flavour characteristics but with a higher alpha acid. Prima Donna has excellent aroma qualities and much of the flavour characteristics of WGV and has proven a success in stronger flavoured summer beers and IPAs. This variety is suitable as a general kettle hop and also for late and dry hopping in all types of beer. A dwarf variety growing to 2 - 3 metres and with short laterals. Excellent choice where space is limited.
  • General Trade Perception: Dual purpose, versatile hop with a rich citrus character and a well balanced bitterness and a fruity, slightly spicy note.
  • Possible Substitutions: East Kent Goldings, WGV, Willamette.
  • Beer Styles: EPA, American Pale Ale, IPA, English bitter, Blonde Ales.
  • Maturity: Mid season.
  • Yield: 1300 - 1900 kg./ha. or 1100 - 1700 lb./ac.
  • Growth Habit: Moderate. Dwarf.
  • Disease Reaction: Fairly tolerant to Verticillium Wilt. Resistant to Powdery Mildew. Susceptible to Downy Mildew.
  • Pickability: Good
  • Lupulin: Bright yellow, plentiful.
  • Cone Structure: Medium to large. Compact.
  • Aroma: Spicy, floral, fruity.
