• Pedigree: Spalter Select was bred as a cross between Spalter and Hallertauer Mittlefrüh by the Hops Research Institute in Hull, Germany. It was developed in about 1988 and was aimed to replace the Spalter variety by providing stronger growing characteristics. Spalt Select is classified as a noble variety due to its low co-humulone content.
• General Trade Perception: Traditional noble aroma hop with average bitter value and pleasant aroma.
• Possible Substitutions: Saaz, Tettnanger.
• Beer Styles: Kolsch, Marzen, Lager, Pilsner, Helles, Bock.
• Maturity: Mid to late season.
• Yield: 1,600 - 1,800 kg./ha.
• Growth Habit: Vigourous.
• Disease Reaction: Resistance to Downy Mildew and Verticillium Wilt.
• Pickability: Good.
• Lupulin: Yellow to dark yellow.
• Cone Structure: Compact, medium sized.
• Aroma: Earthy, citrusy aroma with spicy, floral and fruit tones.
